King Crimson - Red

King Crimson are giants in the progressive Rock genre, and for good reason. Their song writing is raw, yet refined; virtuous, yet not too self-indulgent, experimental, yet not inaccessible. King Crimson have always been willing to really push the boundaries of traditional songwriting and musicianship, without sacrificing the quality of the song itself.

These facts, to me, are especially evident in the Red album, from the visceral, dynamic opening track, to the hauntingly beautiful closer, "Starless."  This album exudes atmosphere, utilizing layering and dynamics to create a truly immersive listening experience. Songs like "One More Red Nightmare" surround the listener with chaotic melodies and rhythms, complete aural insanity that manages to captivate, rather than turn away, whereas tracks like "Fallen Angel" see the band take a more mellow approach, with smooth vocals and soft keyboard melodies intertwining with one another to produce a truly gripping, mesmerizing sound.

Red a must for any progressive rock enthusiast: a passionate, complex, well-written work that stands up against the sands of time and bears to be listened to again and again.
